Extensive Definition

A predominant chord in musical theory is any chord which leads naturally to a dominant chord. Common predominant chords are ii, IV, vi, and V/V. Other examples are bVII and bVI. The predominant harmonic function is part of the fundamental harmonic progression of many classical works.
